A warrior monk is a fighter or guard employed by a religious group to defend itself against non-believers, protect its followers, and guard its facilities and festivals. It also refers to religious groups that have become armed organizations and their members. By extension, it is also used to describe a person who combines the aspects of a warrior who fights armed and a monk who lives an ascetic life. The literal translation is "fighting monk," but in addition to lower-ranking clergymen taking on the role, there are also cases where external fighters were subordinated (Yamato warriors). In Japanese, it is also translated as a similar concept, monk warrior. [Quoted from Wikipedia]
