Haha, this was how it was back in the day when most game consoles, especially handheld ones, needed batteries. I think up until Game Boy Advance this was common. The Game Boy Advance that has no backlit screen also needed two AA batteries. I think they only ditched this when the Game Boy Advance SP came out, since it has a rechargeable battery.
